FAQ

WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE?

Insulin is produced by the pancreas when we eat foods that contain carbohydrate.  These foods are broken down to glucose (another word for sugar) in our blood.

The normal function of insulin (which is a hormone) is to transfer glucose from the blood into the liver and muscles to be used as energy, and keeping our blood glucose levels in check.

In people with insulin resistance, the muscles and the liver prevent the insulin doing its job, so the body has to produce higher amounts to keep the blood glucose levels at a healthy, normal level.

IS THERE A CURE FOR INSULIN RESISTANCE?

Doctors will tell you there is no cure, that Insulin Resistance will have to be managed throughout your life.

However, we have found through personal experience and through others testimonials that it CAN be reversed through diet and some lifestyle changes.

You need to consult with your doctor about your particular situation.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INSULIN RESISTANCE AND METABOLIC SYNDROME?

There are many schools of thought about this. We subscribe to the opinion that insulin resistance is both a standalone condition and a condition that can be a part of metabolic syndrome.

The official description of metabolic syndrome is: "Metabolic syndrome consists of  a number of factors such as includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels.

The syndrome increases a person's risk of heart attack and stroke."

WHY IS INSULIN RESISTANCE DANGEROUS?

Insulin resistance if not addressed will lead to type 2 diabetes which can lead to horrific things like kidney damage, heart disease, blindness, stroke and even limb amputations!

It also has been proven to be the cause of severe inflammation resulting in hypertension and cancers.

IS INSULIN RESISTANCE HEREDITARY?

Just because you have a family member with Insulin Resistance does not mean you will be diagnosed with insulin resistance.

However, it can mean you are predisposed to this disease. Making sure you eat healthily and get some exercise every day will ensure you keep it at bay, leaving you to enjoy life to its fullest!

DO ONLY OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE HAVE INSULIN RESISTANCE?

No.

Although high insulin levels often are the cause of weight gain or the inability to lose weight, being insulin resistant does not mean you are overweight.
